An optometrist can help your child choose the right pair of prescription eyeglasses to correct refractive errors such as myopia (nearsightedness) and hyperopia (farsightedness). However, it’s not uncommon for a child to refuse to wear glasses. What should you do if this is your child? Here are some suggestions.
Take It Positively
This is about you as a parent too. It is also about your entire family. Unless you are completely supportive of your child wearing glasses, it’s possible that your child will refuse to wear them. It’s all about being positive and supportive.
Talk to Your Child
Ask your child why they are refusing to wear glasses. This can help you find out whether your child is uncomfortable wearing them, experiencing headaches or dizziness, or some other reason. Some kids don’t want to wear glasses because they’re concerned about how other kids would react. By having a conversation with your child, you may be able to determine why they don’t want glasses and how you can proceed.
Have a Professional Explain the Importance of Glasses
You can ask your eye doctor to explain to your child why they need to wear eyeglasses. Some children respond better when they realize that an expert is explaining things to them.
Make Choosing Eyeglass Frames a Fun Exercise
Instead of choosing what you think will look good on your child, allow them to join the activity of choosing their own frames. They might already have an idea of what would make them look “cool” in school, so it’s going to be easier if they decide.
