Addressing Acne Problems When Wearing Glasses

Are you experiencing an acne breakout around the area where your eyeglasses touch your face? If so, it may be wise to have your frames checked by a trusted eye doctor.

Is It Really Acne?

To determine if your glasses are causing acne, take note of where the breakout is located. If it is at the bridge of your nose, your cheeks where the rims sit, and/or the ears where your eyeglasses might rub against the skin, it could be related to your eyeglasses. Note that the breakout may not actually be acne, as other factors can cause breakouts when wearing glasses. 

Effective Remedies

Frequently breakouts in the areas of your face that come in contact with your eyeglasses can be bothersome if not properly treated. To help you out, our resident optometrist has put together a few simple remedies that can help relieve the skin and make it as clear as your eyesight:

• Wipe your glasses clean. Washing your face won’t work if you don’t regularly keep your glasses clean. Be sure to clean your frames, especially in the areas that come in contact with the skin. You may use soap and water, but rubbing alcohol can be used as well. Just don’t use it to clean the lenses!
• Stretch the glasses gently. Dead skin cells naturally shed from your skin, but if they’re constantly in contact with the frames, they can block pores and lead to breakouts. As such, it helps to adjust the fit of your glasses to prevent the frames from squeezing the pressure points on your face.
