Glaucoma, also known as the “silent thief of sight,” slowly robs you of your vision without showing any preceding signs. But here’s the good news: it’s not all gloom and doom. While glaucoma isn’t entirely preventable, eye doctors often emphasize early prevention and management. Since January is Glaucoma Awareness Month, Alderwood Optical & Canyon Park Vision Clinic provides an overview of this eye disease in this article.
One of the most effective ways to protect yourself from glaucoma is through regular eye check-ups. When diagnosed early, a management plan can be implemented.
Several factors increase the likelihood of developing glaucoma. If you’re over 60, have a family history of the condition, or suffer from diabetes, you’re at a higher risk. Those of African or Hispanic heritage also run a greater risk of glaucoma. It’s important to keep in mind these factors so that you can have more targeted discussions with your eye doctor.
While glaucoma cannot be reversed, you can slow its progression by doing the following:
Regular eye exams. Schedule frequent eye examinations to monitor changes in intraocular pressure and detect glaucoma early on.
Medication adherence. If prescribed, consistently use glaucoma medications as directed by your eye doctor to control eye pressure.
Healthy lifestyle choices. Maintain a well-balanced diet, exercise regularly, and manage conditions like diabetes and hypertension, as these can impact glaucoma progression.
Protect your eyes. Wear sunglasses with UV protection to shield your eyes from harmful rays, and consider protective eyewear in high-risk environments.
Reduce stress. Incorporate stress-reducing activities into your routine, as high stress levels may exacerbate glaucoma progression.
Despite glaucoma being a significant player in vision loss, it doesn’t have the power to steal your sight without a fight. Early detection and adherence to management practices can slow its progression. If you’re exhibiting glaucoma symptoms, let Alderwood Optical & Canyon Park Vision Clinic assist you in fighting this battle.
