Myopia, or nearsightedness, is very common, with nearly 50% of people experiencing it. Myopia occurs when the cornea is irregularly curved or shaped, causing far-away objects to look unfocused and blurry. The condition often develops in childhood, and Alderwood Optical & Canyon Park Vision Clinic is here to share some info!
Eyeglasses
Myopia is most commonly corrected in children through the use of eyeglasses, some of which can even help slow the progression of the condition. There are many types of lenses that help correct vision, such as:
Single Vision Glasses
Eyeglasses that correct vision, but don’t help to slow down the progression of myopia.
Progressive or Multifocal Glasses
These types of eyeglasses perform well in both correcting your vision and slowing down myopia progression. If you’re not sure what would be best for your child, your eye doctor will be happy to discuss the options.
Contact Lenses
Contact lenses are applied directly on the surface of the eye to correct vision. There are two general categories: hard and soft lenses. Hard lenses retain their shape while on the surface of the eye, while soft lenses are more flexible and thinner.
-
Gas Permeable Hard Lenses
These are durable and easy to care for. They are effective at correcting your vision and have varying myopia progression rates. Some people do find them uncomfortable and difficult to adjust to.
-
Multifocal Soft Contact Lenses
The most popular option, these soft contact lenses come in various colors and designs and are effective both at correcting your vision and slowing down the progress of myopia.
Orthokeratology or Sleep Lenses
These special lenses are designed to be worn while you sleep and then removed when you wake up. They are used to slow down myopia’s progression.
