Post-Laser Eye Surgery: Tips to Help Heal Your Eyes Faster

Laser eye surgeries, be it laser-assisted in situ keratomileusis (LASIK) or photorefractive keratectomy (PRK), have made it possible for people with refractive issues to see the world more clearly. While these procedures are virtually painless and minimally invasive, they require patients to go through a recovery period.

Knowing what to do—and what to avoid—following the surgery helps heal the eyes faster and prevent complications. Trusted optical care providers Alderwood Optical & Canyon Park Vision Clinic share some tips to keep in mind:

Never Touch or Rub Your Eyes

You might feel a bit of discomfort after the procedure. Though it is challenging, you have to resist the urge to touch or rub your eyes. If possible, wear a pair of goggles to avoid rubbing or touching them unconsciously.

Follow Your Doctor’s Recommendations

If you have been prescribed eye drops by your eye doctor, follow everything as instructed. Use them at specific times of the day to ensure your cornea is well-lubricated and to avoid irritation. Stick to the care plan outlined by the surgical team, and use any medications as directed. Be sure you visit your doctor’s follow-up appointments as well.

Take Plenty of Rest

Even if you feel fine after your laser eye surgery, you might have to stop your daily routine. Rest your body for at least two days, making sure to avoid any activities that may put your eyes under unnecessary stress like reading, watching TV or using your mobile phone. Avoid playing sports for at least a month. Ease your way back into your normal routine as slowly as you can.
