An eye exam helps make sure your visual health is in good shape. If you have one scheduled soon, you might want to make the most of your time during the appointment. Check out this list of questions to ask your optometrist.
1. “Are there things that I can do to improve my vision?” This question is usually asked if you have been diagnosed with a condition that may threaten your eyesight, like cataracts or macular degeneration. But even if you aren’t suffering from any of these serious diseases, it still pays to ask your eye doctor for tips on how you can preserve your vision in the long term. Being proactive with your overall eye health exposes you to a variety of options you never know you had.
2. “Are my digital devices affecting my eyes?” Exposure to digital devices is now a part of one’s daily life, be it watching TV, fidgeting on your phone or working on a computer. If your screen time extends for hours on end, you may end up experiencing symptoms of digital eye strain. These include headaches, blurred vision, dry eyes and neck and shoulder pain. Ask your optometrist if you can get specialized prescription glasses or lenses to reduce the effects of prolonged exposure to digital devices.
3. “When should I return for my next visit?” Your next visit will be determined based on your age, vision and medical history. Make sure to follow the schedule religiously to keep your eye health in top condition. If you also have family members in need of an eye exam, bring them with you as well. After all, a visit to an eye doctor is encouraged not just for adults and the elderly, but also for school-aged children and teens.
