Need new eyeglasses? In addition to selecting frames that feel comfortable and fit your sense of personal style, you also need to choose the right lens type. In today’s post, a trusted optometrist discusses the four most common lenses available so you can make an informed decision.
Scratch-Resistant Coating
While no eyeglass lens is 100% scratch-proof, scratch-resistant lenses come pretty close. This type of lens is treated with a clear, scratch-resistant coating so that it has a much harder surface.
Anti-Reflective Coating
Also called AR coating, this type of lens eliminates reflections from the front and back surfaces of your eyeglass lenses. AR coatings also eliminate glare caused by light reflecting from your lenses. Your eye doctor may recommend lenses with an AR coating if you frequently drive at night or read a lot.
Anti-Fog Coating
Eye doctors recommend this option if you live in a cold climate. Anti-fog lenses, also called fog-free lenses, eliminate the condensation on lenses that cause fogging when you make the transition from a cold environment to a warm one. It also prevents your lenses from fogging up during strenuous activities.
UV-Protective
Just as sunscreen protects your skin from the sun’s harmful UV rays, UV-protective lenses block these rays from damaging your eyes. While regular lenses block most UV light, UV-protective lenses offer 100 percent protection for added safety.
